Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)

Ground fighting with a belt system: Gi and No-Gi

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)

Intelligence and technique-based ground fighting with position, control and submission techniques; independent of age and strength.

Membership from 1,800 TRY/month

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is known as "the gentle art": a smaller athlete can control a larger, stronger opponent with correct technique. It is based on ground fighting, positional superiority and choke and lock techniques. In our academy classes are split into Gi (with kimono) and No-Gi (without).

The belt system

For adults, white, blue, purple, brown and black belts are awarded in order. Promotion times average 1.5–2 years from white to blue and 2–3 years from blue to purple. Progress is tracked in each belt with a stripe system. Children's and youth belt systems are separate.

Class content

  • Warm-up and ground-specific movements (shrimp, bridge, roll)
  • Technique of the day: position control, transitions, locks
  • Paired drills and positional sparring
  • Free rolling (controlled), stretching at the end

Hygiene and safety

To prevent skin infections a clean kimono, short nails and a shower before class are required. The "tap" rule is obeyed at once in locks and chokes; aggressive technique is forbidden to prevent neck and joint injuries. Those with a history of head trauma and neck problems should tell the coach.

The tournament team competes in categories by belt level; support is given for participation in Gi and No-Gi tournaments.

Scope of service

  • Gi and No-Gi classes
  • Belt and stripe system
  • Positional sparring

Frequently asked questions

I have never exercised; can I start combat sports?
Yes. Beginner groups are non-contact for the first 4–6 weeks; stance, footwork and basic strikes are taught. Most of our members started with no sports background.
Is a medical report compulsory?
Yes. A report issued within the last 6 months stating that there is no obstacle to combat sports is required. Sports physician approval is requested for cardiovascular disease, epilepsy, eye problems, disc herniation, a history of head trauma or pregnancy.
Is sparring compulsory; will I be hit in the head?
No. Sparring is done only with those who choose the relevant group, under coach supervision, with level and weight matching. There is no contact to the face in beginner and children's groups.
What equipment should I buy?
In the first session equipment is from the academy. Afterwards boxing gloves (12–14 oz), wraps, a mouthguard and clean sportswear are enough. BJJ needs a kimono and rashguard; sparring needs headgear and shin guards.
At what age can my child start?
From age 6 they can join the Mini group. Programmes are non-contact and play-based. Guardian consent and a medical report are needed.
